Frequently Asked Questions

Precision Medicine

Precision medicine is a targeted approach to understand the mutational drivers of each cancer so that specific therapies can be used to target those mutations and fight the cancer more effectively.

The areas of medical conditions covered are:

  • cancer that is not responding to the 1st line treatment (as confirmed by the treating oncologist)
  • cancers diagnosed at Stage III or IV
  • cancers of unknown primary origin (the absence of a clearly detectable primary tumor)
  • rare forms of cancer

Molecular profiling tests may use one, or a combination of technologies to reveal information about cancer, including:

  • Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) – rapid examination and detection of DNA/RNA alterations through comprehensive gene panels
  • Immunohistochemistry (IHC) – to determine the level of protein expression in a tumour
  • Tumour Mutational Burden (TMB) – to identify patients who may benefit from immunotherapy

Molecular profiling usually takes 2-4 weeks to get results from the moment the lab receives the sample. Patients should not stop treatment whilst waiting for the results of any molecular profiling tests.
